Press release: EGDF PUBLISHES 2024 EUROPEAN GAMES INDUSTRY INSIGHTS DATA

THE 2024 EUROPEAN GAMES INDUSTRY INSIGHTS DATA HIGHLIGHTS THE RESILIENCE OF THE EUROPEAN GAME INDUSTRY

Brussels, 21.08.2026 –  The European Games Developer Federation (EGDF) has published the 2024 European Video Game Industry Insights Report. According to the data, the EU game industry has reached 6600 studios that employ over 95 000 people and generate a combined industry turnover of 24 billion euros.

The 2024 European Video Game Industry Insights Report, developed in collaboration between the European Games Developer Federation (EGDF) and Video Games Europe (VGE), remains the only comprehensive report providing an overview of the state of the European game industry.  Over the years, it has become an important source for monitoring the development of the dynamic European game development ecosystem.

For 2024, the Report compiles aggregated national data from 28 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, The United Kingdom and Turkiye

The report demonstrates that despite challenging times, industry growth continued in several countries, in both revenue and the number of studios, lifting both indicators at the European level. However, layoffs, consolidations, and declining employment led to stagnation and, in some countries, a small decrease in employment – the first such dip in the sector for the first time.

For the first time in years, we have data from Bulgaria and Cyprus for this report. With its EUR 4,3B combined industry turnover, Cyprus takes the place of the main game industry hub in terms of combined industry turnover in the EU. Bulgaria is an important regional hub surrounded by key European game industry talent hubs, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey, giving it an excellent strategic position for growth.

In terms of number of studios, Sweden maintained its position as the leading game industry start-up hub in the EU, with over 1100 game developer studios. However, this is about half of the studio base in the UK, which reaches 2100 studios.

With close to 15 000 people working in the industry, Poland clearly has the largest game industry talent base in the EU. Outside the EU, Turkey has reached a talent base about the same size as Poland’s. However, the UK, with over 28 000 people working in the industry, has clearly the biggest talent base in Europe. With over 9300 industry talents, Istanbul remains the main game industry talent hub, followed by Warsaw (6300), London (5900), Stockholm (5900), Barcelona (5300) and Paris (5000).
